Fall Horticulture Update

Every Autumn, the Parks and Recreation department plants thousands of tulips throughout the city with a high concentration of them being in Fessenden Park. Tulips provide a burst of color in the spring with nearly endless variations to choose from. These tulips share the same beds as the city's annual flower displays and provide a wonderful palate for artistic expression. We plant our tulips in the same beds as our annual flower displays, but they can also be used in containers/pots.

Tulips are planted in the ground in Autumn with the best time to plant being November. They can be planted in October as well, but will just bloom earlier. make sure to protect your bulbs from frost if they are planted in pots. Tulips can be planted in full sun to part shade. Planting them in shade will allow the blooms to last longer. Bulbs should be planted 6 inches deep with the pointy end facing up. We add compost and Bulb Tone fertilizer to our beds.

In addition to planting the 2022 Tulip bulbs, our horticulture team also planted loads of native shrubs and perennials in our habitat restoration areas in Baxter Woods, Fish Point, and Baxter Pines. The perennial flower cutbacks are nearly complete and the team is now getting ready for snow!
