Repairs and Restoration to the Deering Oaks Pedestrian Bridge and Ravine.

5/14/2010 - The Department of Public Services initiates repairs and restoration to the Deering Oaks Pedestrian Bridge and Ravine.

The Department of Public Services announces that the Deering Oaks Pedestrian Bridge and the Ravine will be undergoing repairs over the next several weeks. The Pedestrian Bridge needs surface repairs to avoid damage from water infiltration. Additional restoration work includes installing replacement lighting along the bridge railing. The bridge dates back to 1911. Knowles Construction has been hired to make repairs to the Ravine by removing the older surface material and replacing with new surface coating material. Contractors are on site today, May 14 and will work through the week of May 17 on the Ravine Surface improvements. The exiting surface material has experienced cracking and separation. The Ravine area is a popular location for children and parents during the summer months and the contractors work will be in advance of when the water is activated for this area.

In addition, staff is working with the Historic Preservation Board on the preferred restoration repair strategy for the pedestrian Bridge. The contractor will be demonstrating what the surface repair materials will look like to the Board at a special on site meeting on Wednesday, May 19 at 5pm at the Deering Oaks Ped Bridge location. Once the repair strategy is approved the work will take approximately 3-4 weeks to complete. The Bridge will not be accessible to the public during construction.
