“…for the fashion is so fixed, that no person builds a house on a respectable street but his first object is to plant trees about it. Through the whole period of our history, Portland properly has been called the ‘Forest City’ “.
(History of Portland, William Willis. 1864)

Co-Op Tree Planting Program 2011
< OTHER PROGRAM

Portland’s Co-Op Program is a tree-planting partnership where Portland residents purchase a tree at one of three local nurseries. The City's Forestry crew will pick up the tree and properly plant it for you. The tree must be in view of the public and planted along city street right-of-ways. Trees can be planted within the street ‘right-of-way’, between the sidewalk and street, or setback on lawn areas in view of the public. Trees must be purchased by June 1st as trees are planted during the month of June only.

The goal is to plant the 'Right tree - in the Right space'.

Residents purchase the tree at one of 3 Co-Op Nurseries before June 1st and the Forestry crew picks up the tree at the nursery and properly plant the tree during the month of June. Co-Op Nurseries supply quality plant material, often at discount, to the Co-Op Program and provide a guarantee. Nurseries will care for your tree until it is picked up and delivered to the planting site.

STEP 1: TREE SELECTION
Review trees listed from our recommended list. Keep in mind the desired tree characteristics along with the site conditions. Contact the Forestry Section of Public Services to get on our preliminary planting list and to receive recommendations.

STEP 2: TREE PURCHASE
Purchase a tree from the recommended list at a participating Co-Op nursery.

STEP 3: REGISTRATION FORM
Return the Co-Op Program registration form to Portland Public Services prior to June 1st by mail to “Portland Co-OP Tree Program” 55 Portland Street, Portland, ME 04101, or FAX 874-8816 or e-mail: jst@portlandmaine.gov .

GUIDELINES:

a) Trees can be planted in the city "right of way" including tree-wells/esplanades or setback on front or side lawn areas of resident’s property, in view of the public, usually between the home and the street.

b) Location - New trees need to be planted at least 10' away from intersections, utility poles, hydrants, driveways and traffic signals.   Tree planting grow spaces need to be greater then 3.5 feet wide minimum.  This includes tree-belts or esplanades and tree wells.  Avoid future tree / utilities conflict both underground and overhead.  All tree locations are sent to ‘Dig Safe Systems’ for clearance prior to planting. Tree planting along major arterial streets are planted at the back of sidewalk to avoid damage.

NOTE – private underground utilities, underground irrigation systems and dog fences are the responsibility of the property owner.

c) Tree Selection - Street-trees are selected from our Recommended Tree List, trees planted on lawn areas or ‘set-back’ locations are more flexible.

d) Purchase Trees by June 1st at one of the local Co-Op Nurseries.

e) Planting is limited to 2 trees per year.

Co-Op Tree Planting will take place in June. Trees must be purchased by June 1st from one of the Co-Op Nurseries. Your tree will be properly cared for and watered as needed at the nursery. Residents will be contacted by the Forestry Section to locate the planting site. Tree locations can be marked with a small stake or white ‘X’. All planting sites are sent to ‘Dig Safe Systems’ for underground utilities to review. Co-Op Tree registrations will be accepted between April 1st and June 1st. Due to transportation and mobilization challenges, trees to island neighborhoods may be limited to transportation to only and not planting.

The City of Portland reserves the right to refuse tree planting due to poor site conditions, presence of underground or overhead utilities or trees that do not meet city standards. Replacement trees may be adjusted away from utilities, old stumps or roots.
