When do I need permission to remove a tree from my private property?

If the tree in question is not within the Shoreland Zone and does not fall under the Heritage Tree Protection Ordinance, you do not need the City's permission to remove the tree from your private property. Please see the Heritage Tree Removal Application for more information on how to determine if your tree meets the Heritage Tree designation. When in doubt, feel free to email us at trees@portlandmaine.gov.
