City Introduces After-Hours Vehicle Registration

news alert

The City of Portland will temporarily extend Treasury Department hours of operation beginning tomorrow, June 11, to ensure residents are able to register autos and boats in compliance with Governor Mills’ Executive Order 53-A.

The Department will remain open by appointment only until 6:00 PM every Wednesday and Thursday through July 10 to help residents register their autos and boats by the July 11 deadline.

Appointments can be made at www.portlandmaine.gov/Treasury or by calling 207-874-8300.
Appointments are mandatory in order to maintain social distancing efforts.

While newly purchased or transferred vehicles require in-person registration, registration renewals can be completed quickly online at www.maine.gov/bmv/rapid-renewal

Executive Order 53-A, signed into law May 26, mandates that vehicles “required to be registered after purchase or transfer of ownership or for which a registration expires or has expired” are registered within 30 days of the termination of the state of civil emergency, currently scheduled to end June 11, 2020.

City Hall will remain closed to the public until June 22 for all but a few transactions:

  • Birth, death, and marriage certificates
  • Voting & elections
  • Dog, hunting, and fishing licenses
  • Auto and boat registration
  • Excise tax payment
