Renovation of Allen Avenue Fire Station to Begin This Fall

Construction to renovate the Allen Avenue fire station is slated to begin this fall following a fire at the station last October. City officials have been working over the last several months on the new design, including touring other newly built fire stations in the area, such as in Cumberland and Saco. The new design is key as it will be the model for any future fire station renovations, and is expected to be utilized for the next 60 years. The new fire station will include a sprinkler system, fire alarm system and will address ADA-compliance issues.

“We’d like to thank the North Deering community for their patience as we’ve worked through the process to bring you a new, more modern fire station,” said Interim Fire Chief Keith Gautreau. “Unfortunately, after the fire, it took some time to work out the insurance issues and perform the abatement. But we’re excited to get the renovation underway on a new facility that will not only work for both the men and women emergency responders in our department today, but those that will work for the department in the future.”

The construction work will include a small 500 square foot addition to the building and an overhaul of the interior space. The project is currently going through administrative review by city planning officials and the permitting process is expected to be completed by August.

The recent fire station assessment study did conclude that the Allen Ave fire station is in the correct location for servicing the needs of Portland residents. The study also concluded that several other stations will need work soon, which is why officials wanted to come up with a design that will serve as a blueprint for future work.
