City Honors Adele Masengo Ngoy on World Refugee Day

World Refugee Day

In honor of World Refugee Day, the City of Portland is recognizing the contributions and resilience of those forced to flee from their homelands due to violence, persecution, or natural disasters, and is celebrating the vibrant refugee and immigrant community and the diverse experiences they bring to Portland.

Mayor Ethan Strimling, Councilor Pious Ali, and other members of the City Council will present a proclamation to Ms. Adele Masengo Ngoy at 12:30 PM on Wednesday, June 20 at her shop, Antoine’s Tailor Shop at 435 Congress Street in Portland.

“On behalf of the City Council, it is our pleasure to honor Ms. Adele as a treasure to the city for her exemplary leadership and its impact on the Portland community,” said Councilor Pious Ali. “Her story and her work makes her a model citizen and an example of what immigrants can be if the right support and resources are available to them.”

Over the past decade, Ms. Masengo Ngoy started her own business, which employs other immigrants and a program that trains immigrant women how to sew and integrate into the community. Adele Masengo Ngoy has been an exemplar of inspiration for all of us by being a tireless leader who made significant contributions in building and enriching our city.
