Overdose Awareness Day Vigil to be Held August 31 in Monument Square

Vigil Flier 2017

For the fourth year in a row, the volunteer-based outreach team of the Portland Needle Exchange Program, I AM HERE, is hosting Portland’s Overdose Awareness Day Vigil on August 31, 2017. This vigil is a part of an international movement organized by the Penington Institute in Australia. Countries all over the world and cities all over the United States participate in this annual event.

International Overdose Awareness Day has been a key remembrance event for those who have died from fatal drug overdoses since 2001. On August 31st, thousands of people worldwide will stand alongside the friends and families of fatal overdose victims to reflect on those who have been lost. The event is organized on the understanding that no-one need feel shame or disgrace over a drug overdose.

In Portland, the annual Overdose Awareness Day Vigil offers all who have been affected by overdose a chance to publicly mourn and help the wider community understand that fatal overdose profoundly affects mainstream society.

This year, the vigil includes an overdose prevention training and naloxone distribution, a lantern-making project and a memorial wall. Participants are invited to bring a photo, drawing or statement to add to the wall. The organizers will also read names of community members who have been lost to a fatal overdose in the last year. The City of Portland’s Public Health Division is sponsoring this event and there will be agency tables with resources and information for the community.

Participation is free. Anyone wishing to be involved may do so.

For more information or to add a name to the list that will be read aloud at the vigil, please email or call (207) 756-8024
